The project has been awarded the “Health Prize” in the “Data for Development (‘D4D) Senegal Challenge”, which was launched to favor the social development and the welfare of Senegal population. The project results show that it is realistic to reduce the proportion of people suffering from schistosomiasis, a water-related disease that causes 12,000 deaths every year and is indirectly related to another 200,000 deaths specially in sub-Saharan Africa. The developed model allows the simulation of the spatial pattern of the disease risk and can be used to optimize the effects of intervention strategies that aim at reducing the national burden of the disease.
